CHAPTER 26

When we arrived at Château Constance, I felt relived. It was the only place that neither Jesse nor Lexy knew about. At least I hoped they did not know. Inside, Aunt Marguerite came out from the study room and put her arms around me.

"Thank heavens you are all right," she said while pulling me closer. Apparently, she called me during our journey here to warn us about Jesse possibly being at Annaliese's house. If only she called a couple of hours ago.

"I will always be all right when Darius is with me," I assured her while glancing at Darius. He caught my gaze and a small smile crept his face.

"Did you know Lexy Pierce killed Aurora? Or the slightest idea why she would?" Darius asked Marguerite. His eyes were full of wrath and his face was rigid.

"We had suspicion that she did but we did not have any solid evidence. Then we had a lead with the Everard twins," she said after looking at me for a long time. I shivered at the name Everard. Darius saw my reaction and placed his arms around my shoulder as I leaned my head on his.

"During that time, Sienna was really close with them. So we had a lot of information. During the investigation on the twins, we push Lexy Pierce to the side for a while. Only after the ball did we found out. Annaliese and I knew Sienna would be safe with you in Romania until we could figure out what to do next," she continued. Darius stared at Marguerite for a long time with his cold face.

"Do tell if anything comes up. I cannot bear to Sienna in danger again," he said finally. He then took my hand, kissed my inner wrist and went upstairs.

"Do not worry about Darius. Bringing back Aurora's death is not making it easy for him. He was really close to her, you know," Marguerite said to me.

"I know but it's just strange that mum never mentioned Darius to me before," I said while crossing my arms.

"We will figure this out, Sienna. I just need you to stay calm and focus," she said. Her words did not satisfy me for some reason. In this hatred and confused situation, I really wanted to know why Lexy would want to kill me and why did she killed my mother. I wanted the truth, which is all I've been wanting all along. The crux to all of this is that the truth can kill.

I went upstairs to see Darius. He was lying on the bed in my room. I lay down beside him, placing my head on his shoulder.

"I am sorry I acted that way just now," he said calmly while taking my hand.

"There is nothing to apologize for."

"Sometimes I think you are too good for me," he said with a smile. I sat up and looked into his beautiful eyes.

"Darius, I know you tend to keep your feelings to yourself but your eyes say otherwise. Your eyes are so beautiful; they reveal all your emotions. When I told you Lexy killed my mum, I saw fury in your eyes. You are not planning to do anything stupid, right?" I asked warily.

"No, nothing like that. I promise you," he said resolutely. I exhaled in liberation from his answer and hope he keeps his promise.
