Love, Lies & Legacy- chapter 12

CHAPTER 12

I stepped into the penthouse to find Jesse sitting on the sofa with is laptop. I was mad at him but that smile has the power to melt any sign of hatred. But I was determined to straight this whole thing out.

"Hey sweetie, how was your day?" he said while closing his laptop shut. I walked over to him and stood in front of him.

"How come you didn't tell me that you dated Lexy before me?" I asked while crossing my arms.

"How do you know about Lexy?" he asked, looking completely stunned at my question. I could see the blood rush to Jesse's cheeks.

"Just answer the question Jesse," I said, locking his gaze.

"Ok, I dated Lexy for a while before you. But it was not a serious relationship. Apparently Lexy is not the commitment type," he said while nervously strumming his fingers on the laptop.

"Now why didn't you tell me that day when she walked into the Cavalli dressing room all leggy and fabulous?"

"Well you walked out so suddenly when she came in. I did not know why but I had a feeling something was not right. So in the end, I did not have the heart to tell you," he said looking innocent. But I detected a hint of guilt. He then stood up and put his arms around me for a hug.

"I am deeply sorry I did not tell you. Can you forgive me?" he asked while kissing my hair. As much as I want to believe him, I could not help but feel a sense of uncertainty. But he did in the end apologize.

"Of course I do. Just tell me next time, ok?" I said while putting my arms around his neck. I waited for a reply but all I got was a smile, a smile full of doubt and guilt.

That night, I could not sleep well. All I could think about was my mysterious family. I was thinking about the society, the ball, the introduction and everything in between. Even though I was safely tucked in Jesse's arms, I did not feel calm like I use to when I'm close to him.

There were other things too, like the fact Jesse was acting a little strange lately. Ever since his encounter with Lexy Pierce, he has been kind of distant. When I confronted him about it, he brushed it off and said that a lot of things were on his mind.

I placed my chin on his chest, feeling every breath he took and almost hearing his rapid heartbeat. I stared out the window looking at the shining full moon. Should I attend the ball? Should I bring back the Masenfer family legacy? Can I handle the family legacy? The next morning, I got a surprising call from Annaliese.

"Hello, my dear," she said cheerfully.

"Hey Annaliese," I said back.

"So how are you adjusting to all the new information you received?" she asked, sounding a bit serious.

"I'm trying to put it all together. But the thing is, there are lots of unanswered questions. Everything is still a mystery to me. I need to know more about my family before I can make the decision to go to that ball or not."

"I understand. So that is why I have arranged a meeting with you and your aunt Marguerite tomorrow."

"Aunt Marguerite?" I asked confusedly.

"Yes, your mother's younger sister. Marguerite is one of the last remaining Masenfers that is closely related to you. I know you have never met her before but believe she is a lovely lady," she said with assurance.

"Ok, where will I meet her?"

"Just wait at the lobby at 10 in the morning. The head of concierge will give you further information," she said sharply.

The next day, I arrived at the lobby at 9.55 am. Then a smart looking man in a black suit came my way.

"Miss Carlson? I have a message from Miss Masenfer. She told me to tell you to go outside. There will be a black Mercedes waiting for you," he said courteously. I thanked him and went outside. The sun was shining bright and the summer breeze was irresistible as I stood by the pavement.

Suddenly a sleek black Mercedes stopped in front of me. A chauffer came stepping out and opened the back door. The windows of the car were tinted so I could not see anyone inside. "Come inside," said a woman's voice from inside the car. I immediately did what I was told and went inside.

The smell of leather came to my senses as I entered the car. But the scent that caught my attention was a scent of various flowers, precisely mixed together to form a very exquisite and most definitely expensive perfume worn by the lithe woman sitting cross-legged in front of me.

She looked a lot like my mum but with hair a lighter shade of brown and a more prominent nose. She was wearing ivory colored pants with a red chiffon blouse and gorgeous peep toe pumps.

"Annaliese was right, you do look a lot like my sister," she said with a smile.

Her smile was very benign and stunning at the same time. The smile lit up her whole face.

"Thanks. You look like my mum too," I said, returning her smile. "I'm Sienna Carlson," I said while lending out a hand.

"I am Marguerite Masenfer. After 17 years, I am grateful to finally meet my only niece," she said as she shook my hand.'

"It's nice to finally meet you too. Don't mind me asking but where are we going?" I asked curiously.

"We are going to your castle. We will talk there about everything that's been running through your unsatisfied mind," she said while putting on her Prada sunglasses.

"Wait a minute, my castle? Since when did I have a castle?" I asked shock and interested by this topic.

"Aurora wrote it in her will. You inherited the Château Constance. Its one of the various mansions and castle our family has. Your mother and I use to spend our summers there when we were young."

Now that was something you do not hear everyday. I actually have my own castle. I felt extremely joyous but a little shocked at the same time. The Masenfer family has a lot of surprises. We spent the rest of the trip in silence. Slowly I could see the town of Paris fade away and the beautiful green countryside started to appear.

About half an hour later, we stopped in front of a huge gold plated gate. As the gates open, I could not believe what I saw. The pathway was surrounded with golden pine trees. Towards the end was a magnificent stone castle with engraved arch window and mosaic roofs. We stepped out of the car and I tried to control myself. My house in New York was huge but this castle was like 3 times bigger than it.

We entered the old fashioned oak doors and the inside was even more breathtaking. The floors were white marble; there was a fabulous one-foot vase of various flowers in the middle of the room. Cream-colored sofas were arranged around the massive fireplace and at the end of the room was a magnificent glass window that went up to the ceiling.
